Maersk and Rickmers to operate US flagged breakbulk and project cargo service

Maersk Line and Rickmers-Linie are to join forces to provide a breakbulk and project cargo service, under the US flag, using two new purposefully built 19,000-tonne vessels.
The Maersk Illinois and the Maersk Texas are twice the size of any other heavy-lift multipurpose vessel operating under the US flag, with each ship having a combined maximum lift of 480 metric tons. The service will operate under the name Maersk-Rickmers, according to World Maritime News.
"The introduction of these vessels further signals Maersk Line, Limited’s long-term commitment to the U.S. flag," said John F. Reinhart, president and CEO of Maersk Line, Limited. "The partnership with Rickmers forms a strong team that will deliver outstanding service to shippers worldwide."
The ships, currently under the Marshall Islands flag, will be reflagged by ship-owner MLL, with the respective vessels scheduled to make their maiden voyages in November this year.
"The partnership will have a positive effect on US trade by providing cargo owners the customer-oriented service both companies are known for," added President and CEO of Rickmers-Linie (America), Sean Carney.
