EU, US reach air cargo security deal to accept European screening standardsTHE European Union and the United States have reached an agreement to recognise each other's air cargo security programmes after talks concluded between the European Commission and the US Transportation Security Administration.

"Air cargo is vital to the global economy, said International Air Transport Association (IATA) director general Tony Tyler, former CEO of Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific Airways.

"By value, 35 per cent of goods traded internationally are transported by air. It is critical for global business that these shipments move both securely and efficiently. The US-EU Cargo Security Agreement marks a major step forward in one of the most important air cargo markets," he said.

"Regulators and the industry have worked closely together throughout seven years with a focus on harmonisation and better security. We hope that this agreement is the cornerstone for further alignment, especially for passenger security. This partnership model should serve as a template for other national regulators moving towards risk-based security regimes," Mr Tyler said.

The US-EU cargo security agreement means that the US recognises the equivalency and effectiveness of EU cargo security in all 27 EU member states and Switzerland.

This will allow all air carriers flying out of the EU and Switzerland to apply EU security measures as a means of complying with US law. Similarly, the EU recognises the equivalence of the US air cargo security regime that will allow cargo flying from the US into the EU and Switzerland not to be subjected to additional EU security measures at US airports.
