NOAA Prepares Hurricane ‘Sandy’ Maritime Response
October 29, 2012, NOAA’s National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida, has issued its tropical weather outlook due to the presence of Hurricane Sandy in the Atlantic Ocean off the east coast of Virginia.
Hurricane Sandy, which grew stronger overnight, is located 260 miles south-southeast of New York City, New York with maximum sustained winds of 90 miles per hour – making Sandy a Category 1 Hurricane. Hurricane Sandy is moving to the north-northwest at 18 miles per hour.
The Hurricane Sandy hook has begun and is forecast to remain a Category 1 Hurricane before it makes landfall on or around the Delaware / New Jersey border on early Tuesday morning, October 30, 2012.
New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. are all within the current landfall forecast cone of uncertainty from Virginia to New York – which is causing some forecasters to use the term "Frankenstorm" for the northeastern U.S. Hurricane Sandy landfall just before Halloween on October 31, 2012.
