US east coast ports take steps to brace themselves for Hurricane Sandy
US Eastern Seaboard ports were braced for Hurricane Sandy with extensive contingency plans to limit damage and spare port facilities the worst of the weather, according to the Shipping Gazette.
The Port of New York & New Jersey's maritime facilities were closed. The port of Baltimore enacted maritime condition "Yankee" banning all vessel movements in the port without official approval.
In the flooded New York-New Jersey docks, all deep draft vessels and barges heavier than 500 gross tons remained in port at their moorings with no vessel entering, transiting within the Port of NY/NJ without the permission of the Captain of the Port.
