Will a next-gen tidal energy vessel save UK shipbuilding?
A next-generation tidal vessel may hold the key to the United Kingdom's shipbuilding future in Portsmouth.
The impending closure of a shipyard in Portsmouth has led to several companies to consider occupying the newly vacant space and utilising the existing skills and knowledge base, reports Maritime Journal.
One such company is Aurora Ventures, which hopes to secure an order to build a fleet of next-generation tidal energy vessels designed by Mojo Maritime. However, the UK government is refusing to underwrite the project, despite providing initial funding. The government’s reluctance is reportedly casting doubt into whether the yard can remain open.
A consortium known as the Portsmouth Shipbuilding Group has been actively seeking to keep the yard open, following BAE System's impending departure from the site, continued Maritime Journal, with one possible cause for the delay in the government's decision being the Scottish referendum.
German shipowner Hammonia Reederei, which signed a memorandum of understanding with Mojo Maritime for the financing of the 'High Flow 4' vessel concept, is reportedly considering the Portsmouth yard alongside sites in Dubai and France, said Maritime Journal.
The twin-hulled offshore construction vessel will be powered by Voith Schneider Propellers and be able to operate in currents up to ten knots using dynamic positioning.
