US holiday imports slow after peak
Container imports at American box terminals is forecast to grow 3.8% year-on-year in December as the peak season winds down and holiday merchandise makes its way fromcongested ports to retailer shelves.
The National Retail Federation (NRF) and Hackett Associates revealed in its latest monthly survey on 5 December that box volume is forecast at 1.37M teu in December. That compares with a forecasted 4.8% y-o-y increase in November to 1.41M, and an 8.5% y-o-y increase in October, the latest month for which after-the-fact numbers are available.
A labour contract between West Coast box terminal operators and dockworkers expired on 1 July. That prompted concerns about potential disruptions that led importers to ship earlier than usual and divert.
