Moody’s Changes US Ports Outlook to Positive
Moody’s Investors Service has changed its outlook for the U.S. ports to stable from negative as container volumes continue to recover.
Moody’s expects U.S. container volumes to rise 2%-3% in 2015, tracking growth in the U.S. economy. The slow but steady recovery in U.S. container volumes will enter its fifth consecutive year in 2015, after declines during the recession. Container growth supports port credit strength by increasing the revenues from the volume-based fees the ports charge shipping lines.
Meanwhile, business conditions for the global shipping lines, the ports’ largest customers, have stabilized, and growth in shipping capacity will drop in 2016, which will help support prices, according to Moody’s.
